Stretch Marks & Cellulite

Kate Moss once said ‘nothing tastes as good as skinny feels’ (She was wrong and will forever be wrong) and that quote has haunted millions of teenage girls and boys for years. As well as adults of all genders.  This pressure to be anything other than yourself, to starve yourself to be smaller, or to change parts of yourself in order to look like a photoshopped supermodel has been reinforced by the media, families and friends for years. But it has to stop. Because the idea of beauty is being distorted and manipulated to the point where things that are completely normal, are seen as ugly??

You know the topic I mean folks, C E L L U L I T E and S T R E T C H marks.

It’s been spoken about on multiple platforms, countless articles and in hundreds of advertisements. Although granted, many of these are pro love yourself and are raising awareness for accepting your body. Many are also encouraging the ridiculous notion that you should be ashamed of them. That you should be doing everything you can to get rid of your cellulite and your stretch marks. That if you have them, you are imperfect and need to cleanse yourself of this evil.

And yet, I have spoken to countless guys who are not bothered by cellulite, countless women who find their partners stretch marks attractive.(So if you don’t like them just cause you think they’re unattractive to the person you like, you are WRONG)

Whether it be cellulite or stretch marks, across all genders, they do not affect the way your partner feels about YOU. (and if they do, it’s time to get rid of that negativity)

Which surely points to the notion that actually, these are not negative qualities to have.

Societies view on beauty is poisonous. The ideal beauty has changed throughout periods of history, for example in the 20’s it was fashionable to have a slim frame and little curves. In comparison in the renaissance, it was deemed attractive if you had a curvier frame, with thick thighs. In fact, in many of the paintings, these women’s cellulite was not ignored, airbrushed or photoshopped (not that they could do that anyway back then) they were painted in all their glory.

Stretch marks tell a story. They are a part of you, they are your warrior stripes, they are your skin. Skin that holds vital organs, bones and muscles. Skin that protects you from maiming these. Skin that provides a barrier to disease and damage. Skin that holds you together.

Cellulite is a friend. An addition to your skin, and yet very much a part of it. The only person whose opinion matters is your own. And if you don’t give a damn about your cellulite, then why would you want to get rid of it.

Your body is not made to please other people, it’s there to keep you alive. It’s there to be a vessel that provides transport to the life experiences that shape who you are. So, who CARES if you have cellulite? Who actually CARES if you have stretch marks? At the end of your life you’ll be reminiscing over memories and experiences, so why waste precious time worrying about things that don’t matter? Why let having these perfectly NORMAL things stop you from doing the incredible things that you are capable of doing? Why waste your time trying to change and please someone else, when you could just change the way you perceive these, and accept them.
